Rivaldo to grace the Subroto Cup final

Brazilian legend Rivaldo will grace the final of the 57th edition of the Subroto Cup which kicks off on September 14. The cup will also see participation of teams from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and US.

Brazil’s former star striker and World Cup winner Rivaldo will grace the finals of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, exactly a year after the legendary Pele’s visit to the country for the school tournament.

The 57th edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament would kick off on September 14 with the sub-junior boys competition and see participation from 98 teams, including 10 foreign, across three categories – the other two being junior girls and boys respectively.

The Subroto Mukherjee Sports and Education Society announced on Thursday that three teams each from Afghanistan and Bangladesh, two from Sri Lanka and one each from Malaysia and Indonesia have confirmed participation. The Central Coast Mariners club from Australia and the Las Vegas Soccer Academy, winner of the Gothia Cup last year, would also be seen in action.

Among the Indian clubs, the academy wings of Mohun Bagan FC, DSK Shivajians, Pune FC, Shillong Lajong FC and Tata Football Academy would be participating. It was also announced that the government had decided to give special sports quota for boys from Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, traditional powerhouses for the sport. Twenty-five outstanding players in each category would also be awarded one-time scholarships.

The society would also be conducting 22 open football clinics at different schools across the Delhi NCR, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan regions under coaches of Delhi Dynamos FC & the Subroto Cup team to help identify and train talented players. The best players selected would form one boys and girls team each and receive a wild card entry in the tournament.

The junior boys competition would also be the last chance for the Indian players to impress the selectors ahead of the Under-17 World Cup to be hosted by India in 2017 with former Brazilian star Rivaldo roped in as special guest for the final of the junior boys tournament on October 22.

The schedule: Sub-junior boys (under-14): September 14-29; junior girls (under-17): September 25-October 10; junior boys (under-17): October 4-22.

Rivaldo to grace the finals

Brazil’s former star striker and World Cup winner Rivaldo will grace the finals of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, exactly a year after the legendary Pele’s visit to the country for the school tournament.

The 44-year-old former Barcelona and Milan star is expected to make an appearance for the U-17 junior boys final at the Ambedkar Stadium on October 22.

Rivaldo was one of the most skillful and creative players of his generation, possessing the ability to both score and create goals. Since making his debut in 1993 to calling it quits in 2003, Rivaldo has played in 74 international matches and scored 35 goals, and won the the World Cup in 2002.

“We are happy to announce that Brazilian football legend Rivaldo will be the guest of honour for the grand finale,” Air Force officials said.

The tournament will see participation from 98 teams, including 10 from abroad.

Last year, Pele had graced the final with his presence at the closing ceremony. Pele had visited the country to watch his former club Santos FC take part in the tournament, which is one of the most famous inter-school football events in the country.
