India gave a dominant performance to rout Nepal 5-0 in the opening match of the SAFF under-15 football championship at the Kalyani Stadium on Wednesday.
The host made an emphatic start, scoring as early as in the sixth minute. Maheson Singh cut in from the left and shot into the top of the net to put India ahead.
The Indians kept Nepal on a tight leash and Maheson contributed in doubling the lead in the 24th minute. This time he moved on the right and provided a low cross to Shubho Paul to complete the formalities.
Captain Anish Mazumder’s 41st-minute header helped India take a 3-0 lead at half-time.
Taison Singh curled in a left-footed free-kick to make it 4-0 five minutes after the resumption, while Sridarth completed the tally in the 56th minute.
India will meet Bhutan in its next outing on Sunday.
In another match, Sri Lanka rallied to beat Bhutan 3-2.
