Weekly digest: Chelsea continues dream streak; Aus blows away Pak

FOOTBALL

In what was a double gameweek in the English Premier League, Chelsea extended its winning run, first to 12 games >with a 3-0 win against Bournemouth on Boxing Day before notching up another victory, its 13th consecutive, with an >entertaining 4-2 defeat of Stoke City on New Year’s Eve . Both games were played at Stamford Bridge.

Keeping pace with Chelsea was Liverpool, which also bagged six points from two victories; a 4-1 thrashing of Stoke City followed by a >1-0 defeat of third-placed Manchester City . City could take only three points from the gameweek as it was unable to follow up the comfortable victory at Hull City on Boxing Day.

Manchester United is also on a winning run of its own, and it also collected maximum points from the festive period. It was not a happy return for David Moyes to Old Trafford as the >Red Devils beat Sunderland 3-1 on Boxing Day and then scored >a comeback 2-1 victory against Middlesbrough . The Middlesbrough victory was special for the home fans as it was former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s birthday, who watched on approvingly from the stands. The Red Devils have now won five league matches on the bounce.

Tottenham was on fire during the festive period, banging in eight goals in its travels. It thrashed Southampton 4-1 in front of its own fans and >repeated the feat at Watford on Sunday evening.

Arsenal too won both its games; >defeating West Brom 1-0 and Crystal Palace 2-0, it overtook Man City for the third position halfway into the league.

CRICKET

Australia defeated Pakistan >by an innings and 18 runs in the Boxing Day game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

New Zealand defeated Bangladesh 3-0 in three match ODI series, winning all the >three games comprehensively . >

South Africa too beat Sri Lanka easily, >winning by 206 runs at Port Elizabeth.

TENNIS

Rafael Nadal >claimed his fourth Mubadala World Tennis Championship brushing aside David Goffin 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in Abu Dhabi.

Former World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic >announced her retirement from tennis.

Another surprising retirement was of >Somdev Devvarman's . "Starting 2017 on a new note, retiring from pro tennis. Thanks to everyone for the love and support over the years," he tweeted on New Year's Day.

BADMINTON

Carolina Marin starred in >Hyderabad Hunters' victory against Chennai Smashers by defeating P. V. Sindhu in the opening match of the Premier Badminton League.
