Zico wants more Indians players in ISL

"Presently most ISL teams have foreign players as key strikers, midfielders or defenders. The moment the teams start having more Indians in key positions, it better for the sport. You go anywhere in Asia, the rule generally is three foreigners and one Asian player." the Brazilian legend said.

The Brazilian legend and the FC Goa coach Zico placed his preference for sides with predominantly Indian players to take the Indian Super League ahead. Zico clearly stated that for the Indian football to develop there should be more Indian players in the sides playing the ISL.

“In the present system we have more foreigners playing in a team than the Indian players. I do not think it is helpful. It will be much better if we have more Indian players in a side,” Zico said addressing the media on Saturday, ahead of his team’s match against the Atletico de Kolkata.

“There has not been much change in the results of the Indian national team in the last three years. Of course, through ISL some talented players are coming up, but for development of Indian football in general, we still have a way to go,” Zico said.

Zico also said it is important to have Indian players in key positions and that is when one can call the ISL an Indian league. “Presently most ISL teams have foreign players as key strikers, midfielders or defenders. The moment the teams start having more Indians in key positions, it better for the sport. You go anywhere in Asia, the rule generally is three foreigners and one Asian player. When that kind of a format is brought in, it will be helpful for the development of the game,” he said.

“The ISL is doing well, but if you have a longer league it will be much better. You need a good start, which ISL has given to Indian football,” Zico said preferring a longer league to take ahead the process of development.
