With June's U.S. Open on the horizon, Day carded a final-round 71 as he completed a dominant wire-to-wire victory ahead of nearest-rival Kevin Chappell at the challenging TPC Sawgrass on Sunday.

Day — adding a 10th title to his PGA Tour collection — was a class above from the outset at the unofficial "fifth major" in Ponte Vedra Beach, matching the course record via a 63 in the opening round.

And Day never looked back just like fellow Australian Greg Norman did when he won 1994 The Players Championship having set the course record, as defending champion Rickie Fowler and world number two Jordan Spieth - who both missed the cut - fell by the wayside, birdieing three holes in a flawless back nine performance on Sunday.

Day's patience was tested early, dropping two shots without registering a birdie on the front nine but he birdied the 10th hole following the turn and added another two at the 12th and 16th.

Chappell was runner-up to Day, his final-round 69 earning him sole possession of second position.

Fellow Americans Justin Thomas (65), 2012 champion Matt Kuchar (68), Colt Knost (69) and Ken Duke (72) were a stroke further back, while Francesco Molinari (72) and Hideki Matsuyama (73) closed out the tournament at nine under.

World number three Rory McIlroy birdied his final hole for a two-under-par 70 to earn a share of 12th place at seven under alongside 2004 winner Adam Scott, who posted a 68.
