Furyk: Europe outplayed us, but I'm proud of USA

United States' Ryder Cup defence failed, but Jim Furyk hailed his players' fighting spirit as they initially pushed Europe on Sunday.

Jim Furyk was proud of the United States' efforts at the Ryder Cup despite acknowledging it was outplayed as Europe triumphed in France.

Team USA threatened a fightback early on Sunday after a tough first two days, but it fell short as Francesco Molinari's fifth win of the week clinched a dominant home victory.

Furyk had no excuses for the defeat and instead admitted that opposing captain Thomas Bjorn had outperformed him, although he was still keen to credit his players.

"I'm proud of these guys, they fought. They came out today [Sunday] and there was a time this morning where it looked like we had a chance in those first five or six matches," he told Sky Sports.

"We put some heat on, those guys scrapped it out and they fought, but my hat's off to Europe. They played well again. When the going got tough in the early afternoon, they turned it around."

"Hats off to Thomas. He's a great captain and his 12 team members, top to bottom, all played very well. Congratulations to them."

He added: "I love these 12 guys. It was an honour to serve as their captain, with five of my closest friends as vice-captains, world-class players as well. It was a group effort."

"But, they outplayed us. Thomas was a better captain this week. I've got nothing more to say than that we got outplayed."

And, Furyk was not willing to be drawn on what the future might hold in the moments immediately after defeat was confirmed. "I'll take a little time to digest. It's still a little fresh. We'll regroup," he said.

"I'll definitely go through some things in my head and work with the PGA of America and our Ryder Cup committee, and we'll move forward."
