Defending champion Dustin Johnson said he is looking forward to the WGC-Mexico Championship because it is a tournament where feels comfortable playing.
Johnson won the WGC-Mexico Championship title for a second time last year, edging Tommy Fleetwood by a stroke at Club de Golf Chapultepec.
The world number one and 2016 U.S. Open champion admitted he was playing his best golf when he reigned supreme in 2017 and said it will be difficult to improve on that level of performance.
"It's always great to come back to a place where you won," Johnson told reporters heading into Thursday's opening round. "Last year being the first year, I thought it was great.
"I really like the golf course, it's really similar this year - maybe it's a little bit softer because I guess they got a lot of rain last week. But other than that, the golf course hasn't changed and a new tee maybe on number 13 or something I think but you know the golf course is in really good shape and I'm really looking forward to getting the tournament started."
Johnson added: "Coming in here last year, I think I felt like everything was really, really, really good in the golf game. You know, it's tough to improve from there but I've been working hard to get things back to where it was last year.
"I felt like it's close, it's not quite there but you know, I mean, I felt like everything's pretty close but yeah it's hard to improve on from where I was playing last year."
Asked whether he felt pressure at the possibility of losing his number one ranking, a relaxed Johnson said any successor would be deserving of their position but that he would stick to his own game plan to retain the title.
"I want to stay number one but I want to win every golf tournament I play in also so if someone plays well and beats me and gets to number one, they deserve it," the 33-year-old American said. "So that's okay with me. I'll just have to win the next tournament and get back to number one."
