Ariya Jutanugarn wins the Women's British Open.

Ariya Jutanugarn made history with victory at the Women's British Open on Sunday, becoming Thailand's first major winner.

Starting the day at 16 under, Jutanugarn had the tournament record score of 19 under in her sights after birdieing two and six to open up a six-stroke lead, but her advantage was down to just one shot after bogeying nine before a double at the par-four 13th.

"On 13, I'm like, 'Oh, what's wrong with me,'" Jutanugarn said. "But after that, I'm really like 'be patient and I can come back really good'."

Patience certainly paid for the 20-year-old and picking up another shot at 17 put Jutanugarn in command and closest challenger Mirim Lee had sunk to a tie for second after dropping a shot at the last.

"I think it's really important for me and for Thai golf, also," Jutanugarn said.

"[This was] my goal, I really wanted to win major and I did. I'm really proud of my achievement because I accomplished my goal this year."

Lee, Jutanugarn's nearest challenger on 14 under heading into the final round, carded 13 under for the tournament, alongside Mo Martin, whose two-under 70 was enough to draw level.

Stacy Lewis shot two under to take fourth with 11 under for the weekend as Karrie Webb, Ha Na Jang and Catriona Matthew were tied for fifth at nine under.
