Koepka holed his second shot from 208 yards at the par-five 16th with a six iron at TPC Sawgrass, where he signed for a nine-under 63 to move into a share of third place. The U.S. Open champion also made six birdies to end his week on a high note and missed the chance to set a new course record when a birdie putt at the last lipped out. Koepka became the eighth player to fire a 63 and his albatross was only the second recorded at the 16th in Players Championship history, a majestic shot finding the cup after bouncing once on the green. The American finished 11 under, eight shots adrift of leader Webb Simpson, who was set to start his final round at 2:45pm local time in Florida.
