Sam Saunders is the leader after the opening round of the Genesis Open was cut short due to darkness.

Saunders - the grandson of Arnold Palmer - carded a seven-under-par 64 to top the leaderboard by two strokes at Riviera Country Club on Thursday.

The American, who is still searching for his maiden PGA Tour win, was flawless, holing seven birdies without a bogey, before darkness set in.

Round one is scheduled to restart at 07:00 local time while the second round will tee off at 07:10.

Dustin Johnson is second behind Saunders and has done just about everything but win the Genesis Open in his already illustrious career.

Last year's U.S. Open champion has a number of top-five finishes at Riviera Country Club, and he is looking to add a victory to his resume this week.

Johnson set himself up for an opportunity with a first-round 66, finishing the day with six birdies and one bogey.

He is joined by J.T. Poston, Daniel Summerhays, Brett Stegmaier and Cameron Percy at five under, while two-time champion Phil Mickelson is a shot further back.

Former world number one Adam Scott played alongside Johnson.

The Australian shot a bogey-free three-under 68. He has won the event previously, unofficially in a 36-hole, rain-shortened year, and twice finished runner-up.

Most of the afternoon wave was unable to complete their rounds due to a fog delay to start the morning.

Jordan Spieth was among those not able to finish their rounds, with the two-time major winner through 16 holes at two under.

World number one Jason Day - at even par - had two holes remaining when bad light brought play to a halt.
