Jordan Spieth needed an impressive finish to his second round at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, but in his first tournament since his Masters collapse, he just did not have enough to make the cut.
Spieth started Saturday off the 15th fairway, after rain pushed his round back on Friday, and ended the hole with a disappointing bogey to make his day that much tougher. He parred the next two holes, leaving himself needing an eagle on 18 to make the two-under cut.
Spieth went for it on his tee shot on 18, barely carrying his shot over the water lining the left side of the fairway, but could only muster a birdie to finish the round one under after an even 72 in round one.
Saturday marks Spieth's 14th missed cut on the PGA Tour and his second consecutive at The Players Championship.
On the flip side of the day, yet in the same group as Spieth, Jason Day finished his round six under to move to 15 under for the tournament - four strokes ahead of second-placed Shane Lowry (-11).
Spieth was not the only heavy hitter to fail to make it to the third round, as Phil Mickelson (-1) missed his third cut in his last four events.
"I don't know if it's surprising [that I missed the cut]," Mickelson told reporters after his round. "It's a challenging course, and it's hard to recover. I've got to make some adjustments on the course, and I just didn't drive it well. [Friday], I hit two fairways; you can't do that around here."
Rickie Fowler, the tournament’s defending champion, and Masters champion Danny Willett also missed the cut at one under.
