He has been one of India’s leading golfers, and SSP Chawrasia believes that the game needs more support to grow in the country.

“In foreign countries, golf has been there for years and in India, we need more support. Corporate groups are helping us, but we need more backing. In the next few years, things will definitely improve,” Chawrasia said.

At a city hotel on Friday evening, Chawrasia was felicitated by TAKE Solutions, along with Shubhankar Sharma, Khalin Joshi, Chikkarangappa and Chiragh Kumar. While Chawrasia was glad by the way TAKE Solutions—also his sponsor—backed him over the years, Chawrasia also admitted that the country needs more public golf courses. “That will make the game grow among masses. We need more public golf courses. That will definitely help more and more people take golf seriously,” the golfer from Kolkata said.

On the other hand, Shubhankar, who has been one on a roll for the last few months, feels that the sport needs more stars to gain popularity. “For any sport to grow, you need stars. Just like in cricket, there was a Sachin Tendulkar who inspired the likes of Virat Kohli to reach where they are now. Guys like Jeev Milkha Singh has been there, and definitely Anirban (Lahiri) has inspired me,” Shubhankar said, adding that if a golfer wins a Major title, things would change.

“I am sure there will one Major winner in the next few years and that would definitely help. The corporate have been backing us and that’s really good,” the young golfer stated.

The evening which was dedicated to the golfers, had two special guests in R. Thyagarajan, and former BCCI chief, N. Srinivasan.
