Anirban Lahiri was delicately poised at three-over through 14 holes, while compatriot Jeev Milkha Singh was at five-over after 16 in the opening round of the US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

The conditions predictably were tough to score, and Lahiri despite being three-over was Tied-55th and Jeev was Tied-96th.

Lahiri had an early double on the par-four second and then dropped yet another shot at sixth to go three-over. He birdied the par-four 11th but gave that gain away on the next hole, the par-five 16th hole.

Jeev had a colourful round with three birdies, six bogeys and one double bogey as he was five-over.

The two Indians will begin their second round soon after the first in what will turn out to be a very long day for all the players. Only nine players finished their first round on Thursday. The rest had to come back and finish it on Friday.

Little known Andrew Landry, who at one stage was five-under for the round ended Thursday at three-under through 17 holes sitting on a 10-foot putt on the ninth, which was his 18th hole. He duly holed the birdie and finished at four-under and then went off for a good long rest.

Lee Westwood, still looking for his first Major after all these years ended the first round at three-under, while Scott Piercy was four-under through 14 holes.

Shane Lowry finished at two-under, while Dustin Johnson was two-under through 12 as was Sergio Garcia.
