Indian hockey legend Mohammad Shahid, who was being treated in a private hospital in Gurgaon, passed away today due to multiple organ failure.

“Yes, he is no more. He suffered multiple organ failure this morning. It’s a sad news,” a source told PTI . The 56-year-old legend was admitted to Medanta — the Medicity — earlier this month after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse. Shahid was airlifted from Varanasi.

"He breathed his last at 10:45 this morning. It was multiple organ failure that led to his passing away. He will be taken to Varanasi and last rites will be performed there tomorrow," said Mohammed Saif, Shahid's son.
Known for his dribbling skills, Shahid was considered one of India’s greatest hockey players. He was a member of the Vasudevan Baskaran-led Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He was also part of the teams that won the silver medal in the 1982 Delhi Asian Games and the bronze in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games.

Shahid made his first appearance for India at the Junior World Cup in France in 1979. He made his senior India debut the same year in a four-nation tournament in Kuala Lumpur under the captaincy of Baskaran. Shahid was inducted into the senior team following his impressive performance in the Aga Khan Cup.

His attacking partnership on the field with Zafar Iqbal was well known.
Shahid was adjudged the 'Best Forward' at the 1980 Champions Trophy in Karachi. His skill and ability earned him a place in the Asian All-Star team in 1986.

Shahid also captained the Indian team in 1985–86. Later, he served as the sports officer in the Indian Railways in Varanasi.
