England secured its place in the last 16 of the Women's World Cup as Jodie Taylor ended her goal drought to claim a 1-0 win over Argentina on Friday.

Vanina Correa's inspired display in Le Havre had kept Phil Neville's side at bay until the 61st minute, when Taylor tucked home her first England goal since April 2018.

Taylor had squandered an earlier chance to end her 430-day barren spell, while Nikita Parris had failed to beat Correa — who made two fantastic saves either side of the interval — from the spot.

England vs Argentina, as it happened

Correa could do little to deny Taylor when she latched onto Beth Mead's defense-splitting delivery, though, as England secured progression from Group D with a game to spare.

England's dominant start could have been rewarded in the 13th minute, had Jill Scott directed a close-range header either side of Correa.

Linda Bravo's clumsy foul on Alex Greenwood gifted England a chance to break through in the 27th minute, but Parris, who scored from the spot against Scotland last time out, saw her effort brilliantly tipped onto the post by Correa.

With Taylor having prodded wide from point-blank range, Correa came to Argentina's rescue again before the break, pulling off a fine save to deny Mead.

Correa's superb performance continued after the restart as she made an instinctive stop from Parris' wicked strike, before Taylor headed straight at the 35-year-old.

But Argentina's resistance was finally ended just after the hour as Mead's delightful cross presented Taylor with a simple finish.

Scott should have made things more comfortable soon after, but with Argentina offering little threat, England duly wrapped up a deserved victory.
