Gujarat Fortune Giants (GFG) got its campaign off to a winning start, trumping Dabang Delhi 26-20 in the the Vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 5  league game at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday night.

Playing its first match of the season, Gujarat was led from the front, literally, by star raider and captain Sukesh Hegde. He combined his vast experience and skills to repeatedly test the rival defence which was never really equal to the task.

Interestingly, he was captaining a side for the first time and said he was not sure how to handle the job in the beginning, but gained confidence as the match progressed.

To the dismay of the Delhi outfit, Sukesh earned a touch point at the stroke of half-time, spurring his team to an all-out thus swelling its lead to 15-5.

But it wasn't just Sukesh, or Sachin, or the all-rounder Rakesh Narwal who hogged the limelight , the defence with Iranian duo of Fazel Atrachali and Abozar Mohajer Mighani helped keep a lid on Delhi's attack.

That the opposition captain Meraj Sheykh and his Iranian teammate Abolfazl Maghsodlou were not given any liberty during their raids was a testament to the efficacy of Gujarat's defence.

So much so that Meraj had to be substituted in the second session following which, Delhi scored 15 points including an all-out, with R. Sriram scoring five raid points.

But in the end, it was the debutant - Gujarat Giants - which romped home with ease.

Delhi now has one win and one loss from its two matches.

UP Yoddha scored an impressive 31-18 win over Telugu Titans late in the night after leading by a slender margin of 12-11 at half-time.

It was the third loss in four games in this round for the home team. The vociferous crowd was hoping for a change in fortunes of its favourite.
