Welcome to the coverage of the 2nd fixture of 23rd October of the Pro Kabaddi League 2022 between UP Yoddha and Tamil Thalaivas at the Shree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Scores read: UP Yoddhas vs Tamil Thalaivas
BIG WIN FOR THE UP YODDHAS TONIGHT. 19 tackle points from the defenders is a very positive sign. For the Thalaivas, not too many positives, but Himanshu put in a few crucial contributions in raiding and defense. This team needs to get its act together fast if they want to have even an outside chance of making the playoffs.
41-24 How nice! Ratan is brought on to the mat and he brings the curtains on this game with a SUPER RAID.
38-24 UP is testing its bench so a few gifts in points for Thalaivas here. Mohit takes out Nitin Panwar.
38-23 UP returns the favour as Sumit takes down Himanshu.
37-23 What a brilliant tackle! Sagar Rathee of PKL 8 just showed himself. He dashes into Aman, turns him and brings him down.
UP Yoddhas is experimenting with its backup raiders. Good strategy from the coach to bring them in such low-pressure match situations.
37-22 Ashu’s shot block stops Narender in his tracks and he has no answers on how to get out of the formation that gathers.
36-22 Pardeep Narwal and Ajinkya Pawar both have unsuccessful raids to their names. So a point each to both sides.
A well-deserved high five for Sumit tonight as this UP Yoddhas defense has done all the heavylifting.
Just over five minutes remain in this encounter.
35-21 Himanshu runs parallel to the baulk line and he is brought down with no way to get to the midline. Pardeep gets up and asks to be sent in. Eagerness from the record breaker!
34-21 Himanshu does a good job as he takes out Nitesh Kumar and Gurdeep. Can they bring this deficit under 7 points?
34-19 Sahil Gulia takes down Pardep Narwal on his own almost with a iron clad double ankle hold.
34-17 Thalaivas gift Surender Gill two points right next to the midline. Sagar the man who gives him the bonuses. This is a terrible performance from the Thalaivas.
32-17 Nitesh is at it again. Sachin the substitute is sent off as fast as he came on to the mat.
31-17 SUPER TACKLE TO THE UP Yoddhas and Narender goes off the court. Did Sumit go off court? Well, we won’t know because the Thalaivas lost their review early.
29-17 Solid tackle. UP Yoddhas’ Rohit Tomar is stopped in his tracks by Himanshu. Stranded.
Pardeep Narwal has been off the court for over 9 minutes now.
29-16 Rohit Tomar with a smart bonus down the right corner. Scares Narender a little along the way
28-16 Gurdeep makes a mistake as he hastily heads towards Himanshu and gifts the Thalaivas a point.
28-15 Nice work here as Surender is brought down close to the midline. Sahil gets a hold on Surender’s ankles and the others support him and handle the dangling hand.
28-14 Raider is thrown out of bounds. He was too deep in the left corner - Mohit the man and Ashu Singh the defender who gets the point
27-14 Nice work from SUrender who is having a slow night. He gets a running hand touch on M Abishek as he gets to the midline. Nicely done.
26-14 Hasty raid from Visvanath as he misreads the defense. SUPER TACKLE to UP Yoddhas. Ashu Singh the man who spoils Visvanath’s do-or-die raid.
24-14 Oh the Thalaivas defense chips in. Himanshu holds on to Pardeep’s thighs and turns him to the side.
24-13 Narender dives in to capitalise on an error from Sumit and goes with the point.
24-12 Pardeep has a touch on Himanshu.
23-12 Some intent from Thalaivas. Visvanath takes out Nitesh Kumar
HALFTIME: 23-11 in favour of UP Yoddhas. While Tamil Thalaivas began with intent, they lost the plot within a few minutes and began bungling positions. UP’s defence has kept the raiders quiet and the Thalaivas defense seems to be operating at 50 percent intent and effort. A few errors here and there have helped UP Yoddhas capitalise and run away with the game. The highlight of the half though is Pardeep Narwal crossing the 1400 raid point threshold. Another day another record for the record breaker! This game needs creativity and grit from the Thalaivas. Their showing in the first half won’t cut it if they want to make a comeback in the second half.
23-11 A penalty point has been given to the UP Yoddhas. Wonder why. This passage of play passed by too quickly. Watch this point for details. Oh and we see why. Double entry of raiders from the Thalaivas side. Elementary errors.
22-11 Himanshu gets a touch on Gurdeep
22-10 Oh Surender looked like he got his leg across the midline and we were wondering if UP should review but the replay shows that his leg crossed outside the playing area. Good review avoided. Unnecessary anyway given the scoreline now.
22-9 Himanshu Narwal has a bonus but is brought down to trigger the ALL OUT. Thalaivas are in deep trouble. Annihilation!
19-8 Oh! Pardeep almost cleaned up the Thalaivas in entirety as he takes two out of the three available players on the mat.
17-8 The UP defense which has a few hot and cold games is roaring today. Nitesh Kumar catches Narender ankle’s mid run and pulls him back with help from his team.
16-8 Ashu Singh avenges that instantly with a clinical tackle on Mohit.
15-8 Lovely work by Sahil Gulia as he wraps himself around Pardeep and pulls him back for the rest of the defense to bring down.
15-7 Pardeep Narwal gets M Abishek as he quietly stacks up the points for UP Yoddhas
14-7 Nitesh Kumar returns the favour and brings down Himanshu
13-7 This will give M Abishek a lot of confidence as he brings down Surender Gill on the right with some help from his team. Went for the good old block!
13-6 Finally, a point for the Thalaivas. Himanshu gets a bonus
13-5 Simple point for UP Yoddhas as Sagar has stepped out.
12-5 Durgesh kept his eyes on the Himanshu Singh’s ankles and triggers his takedown here
11-5 UP Yoddhas have a bonus point courtesy Surender Gill
10-5 The last man for Thalaivas, Ajinkya Pawar, manages the bonus but is brought down. ALL OUT INFLICTED BY UP YODDHAS
7-4 This was seemingly a great super tackle but because Himanshu held on to Surender’s neck, Thalaivas get a green card for dangerous play and the point goes to UP Yoddhas. Sagar’s efforts go in vain as the anklehold to pin down Surender was his.
6-4 Oh brutal. Narender is pushed out of the mat. Referees believe he is out but Thalaivas believe that Narender is through. Replays show that he slides on the white line but off court, he doesn’t cross the white line into the opponent half before going off. Very unfortunate but good replay. A matter of millimeters this game!
5-4 Pardeep Narwal takes out Mohit for daring to try and do stuff outside his skill set.
4-4 Mohit the defender gets a raid point. He’s taken out Sumit for the point
4-3 There we go. Pardeep Narwal reaches the big 1400 milestone! M Abishek the man who is sacrificed for the big milestone.
3-3 BRILLIANT ANKLEHOLD FROM Sumit to take out Himanshu Singh
2-3 Pardeep Narwal is now one point away from 1400 as he gets a touch on Sahil Gulia
1-3 Ashu throws in the thigh hold before Narender is sandwiched from all ends and that brings back Pardeep Narwal.
0-3 Sagar Rathee holds Surender in his tracks and the asisstance he gets helps him bring the big man down. Both of UP’s star raiders are on the bench
0-2 Narender chips away with a bonus
0-1 Pardeep begins proceedings and he’s 2 points away from 1400 raid points but Thalaivas don’t care and bring him down with a backhold and support.
Thalaivas have won the toss and UP will raid first.
Can Tamil Thalaivas manage a revival of Patna Pirates’ calibre? Pirates just botched a win that was theirs to take to draw with Bengaluru Bulls 31-31. Can the Thalaivas give UP Yoddhas something to think about tonight?
As we wait for the 2nd game of the night to begin, here’s something for you to check out.
From top performances to top duds, we discuss them all in our weekly PKL recap YouTube live stream. Check out this week’s analysis here:
Two of the three Himanshus in the Tamil Thalaivas outfit are in the starting seven for the side today. Can they help Narender counter the Pardeep-Surender combo they’re going up against?
UP YODDHAS: Pardeep Narwal, Ashu Singh, Gurdeep, Surender Gill, Durgesh Kumar, Nitesh Kumar, Sumit
TAMIL THALAIVAS: Narender, M Abishek, Mohit, Himanshu, Himanshu Singh, Sagar, Sahil Gulia
MILESTONE ALERT: Pardeep Narwal is nearing the 1400 raid points milestone. Will he get there today?
U.P. Yoddhas have two wins and three losses to their name and are sitting in eighth position in the standings. Surender Gill has been an important cog in the wheel for the Yoddhas and has scored 61 raid points. He has been supported by Pardeep Narwal who has amassed 50 raid points so far. These star raiders have done the bulk of the scoring for the Yoddhas in the raiding department and would welcome more help in attack from their teammates. In defence, Ashu Singh has been their top defender with 14 tackle points, while the defensive duo of Sumit and Nitesh Kumar have contributed 10 tackle points each for the Yoddhas.
Meanwhile, Tamil Thalaivas have one win, three losses and a tie after their first five games and are in 10th position on the points table. Narender has gone about his business very quietly for the Thalaivas and has scored 46 raid points, making him the team’s top raider. He’s been supported by Himanshu Singh, who has looked good in phases and has notched up 19 raid points so far. Both Narender and Himanshu Singh will need to be at their best if Tamil Thalaivas are to beat U.P. Yoddhas. As far as their defence goes, Sagar has led the Thalaivas from the front and has accumulated 12 tackle points thus far. The likes of Sahil Gulia and M. Abishek have also chipped in defensively with 11 and seven tackle points respectively.
