ARUMUGAM is an avid chronicler. His passion for facts and figures finds adequate expression in the compilation of the hockey yearbook. Arumugam's forte is his meticulous approach and painstaking effort in assimilating details from various sources and integrating them into a volume that conveniently compresses a wealth of information.
Apart from detailing the happenings on the world hockey scene in the year that rolled by, Arumugam has taken care to enlarge the base of the book with a surfeit of background material. Of interest are the brief notes on all major hockey playing countries, apart from recording the history, briefly again, of each important competition, from World Cup to Olympics, from Continental championships, Commonwealth Games to invitation tournaments.
It goes without saying that domestic hockey, both men and women, gets a generous measure of focus, reflecting Arumugam's close touch with the sport in and around the country. Detailed reports and results of the inaugural Premier Hockey League, the National Championships, embellish the book as do a large number of pictures. May be, a few pictures in colour would have enhanced the presentation.
A message from the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, endorses the book as "a valuable work (that) retraces, through words and images, the most significant moments in the last two years of regional, continental and world hockey competitions. It also provides up-to-date informative material, and serves as an easily comprehensible reference guide." Nothing accentuates the value of this book more than this observation.
