Sergey Bubka, Olympic champion in 1988 and six-time world champion, has 35 world records to his credit, 17 of them outdoors. He has the top nine marks in the all-time outdoors list, topped by 6.14m, and holds the 10th (6.05m) jointly with Maksim Tarasov of Russia and Dmitriy Markov of Australia.

Indoors, Bubka has the next six marks on the all-time lists behind Lavillenie, up to 6.10m, and shares the eighth (6.08) with the Frenchman.

Lavillenie’s best outdoors is 6.02, a national record he set in London last year. In the 6-metre-club outdoors, where there are 16 men, Lavillenie has two marks including the one in 2009 when he broke through the six-metre barrier. He only had a best of 5.65m in 2008. He has 68 vaults over 5.80m.

Bubka has 28 of the 60 marks over six metres on the all-time charts outdoors.

At 176 cm and 69 kg, Lavillenie is small-built compared to the 184 cm-80 kg frame of Bubka or the 194 cm build of Tarasov or the 182 cm height of Markov.
