Canadian PM applauds

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien said he cheered and applauded for his country's first victory at the Masters. Canada's Mike Weir won the Masters' green jacket — which had never been won by a left-hander or a Canadian — at Augusta National.

"We were all cheering at the end of the game,'' Chretien said during a joint news conference with President Hipolito Mejia on the second day of a three-day trade mission to the Dominican Republic.

Chretien, an avid golfer, said he "stood up and applauded'' when watching the match on television.

The prime minister spoke to Weir by telephone and told him he was "very proud'' of his victory in Augusta, Georgia. He also said he invited Weir to appear at Canada's Parliament, but a date has not yet been scheduled.
