“It's a great feeling to be associated with the Olympic Games that are obviously a question of immense pride for every Englishman,” says Guy Lavender, the Chief Executive of Somerset County Cricket Club who is also involved in the preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games. By V. V. Subrahmanyam.

Guy Lavender might well represent the changing face of cricket administration in England. He is a multi-faceted personality. He served the British Army as a Lieutenant Colonel for 18 years and led the soldiers in some of the most demanding warfronts, including Iraq and Afghanistan. He is now involved in the preparations for the London Olympics and is also the Chief Executive of Somerset County Cricket Club.

According to Lavender there are similarities between a cricketer and a soldier, as both have to be extremely fit, they have to motivate themselves and the others around them, believe in their own ability and, most importantly, face challenging tasks mentally and physically.

“Well, it has been a highly rewarding experience with the British Military and I hope for similar results in cricket too,” he said with a big smile.

“What impressed me about Somerset's cricketing structure is its unique cricket culture, very strong financial base, a huge fan following and most importantly the players believe in team ethos and apparently enjoy playing together as a unit,” said Lavender. Interestingly, Lavender himself was not a big-time cricketer, but he is a huge fan of the sport.

The other interesting facet of this gentleman is that he is involved in the preparations for the 2012 Olympics. According to Lavender, he ensured that the sailing venues were ready one year before the Games. “It's a great feeling to be associated with the Olympic Games that are obviously a question of immense pride for every Englishman,” he said. “The best part of the sailing venue is the impact it has had on the local community.”

On whether London is facing any security concerns ahead of the Olympics in the wake of the recent racial clashes, Lavender, making light of these developments, said: “Security is always the topmost priority for any country hosting any big event. We have full faith and confidence in England's security apparatus. It is capable of handling any exigency measures,” he explained.

“We are fully prepared to host the London Olympics,” he said before joining the Somerset players taking part in the Champions League T20 cricket tournament.
