McLaren's Fernando Alonso was involved in a collision in the season opener in Australia.

Fernando Alonso is confident he will be fit for the Chinese Grand Prix after failing to get medical clearance in Bahrain.

Alonso was ruled out by FIA doctors prior to the second race of the 2016 Formula One season after his huge crash in the season opener in Australia.

The McLaren driver collided with Haas' Esteban Gutierrez going into turn three in Melbourne and slammed into the wall before flipping several times, causing the race to be red flagged.

Alonso emerged relatively unscathed, but fractured ribs led to doctors ruling he was not fit to race in Bahrain. However, the two-time world champion hopes to compete in Shanghai next week.

Alonso hinted at his return on Tuesday with a message to his Twitter followers.

And McLaren boss Boullier confirmed his driver will undergo more scans in attempt to be on the grid in China.

"I think he is confident [of racing in Shanghai]," Boullier told Autosport. "But he's going to go through the scans.

"The FIA will inspect them and decide yes or no."

Stoffel Vandoorne replaced Alonso in Bahrain and picked up McLaren's first point of the season on his debut drive with a 10th-place finish.
