Fernando Alonso is set to return to the grid at the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend after being declared provisionally fit to get back behind the wheel.

The McLaren driver was ruled out of the second race of the Formula One season in Bahrain this month due to lung and rib injuries sustained during a crash in Australia.

Alonso was replaced by Stoffel Vandoorne under the lights in the desert, but the two-time world champion will make his comeback in Shanghai if he passes further medical checks.

A statement on the F1 website said: "Fernando Alonso has been declared provisionally fit to race in China this weekend following a thorough examination by the FIA medical team.

"However, the McLaren driver will have to undergo further checks after Friday's first practice session in order to determine whether he will be passed [fit] to participate in the remainder of the Shanghai event."
