Daniel Ricciardo has the talent to become a Formula One world champion, according to 1978 title winner Mario Andretti.

For the second time in his career, the Red Bull driver finished third in the standings in 2016 – behind dominant Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.

Ricciardo, 27, has four race wins to his name and Andretti feels he is capable of greater things.

"He's very intelligent, very sharp. I've seen him in predicaments where a lesser talent would've been in trouble," Andretti told Omnisport.

"He's very aggressive but very calculated. And he makes just great moves and I love his spirit.

"He seems laid back with a smile but he's ferocious. I love that style.

"He's another one obviously with a bright future and championship calibre for sure."
