Verstappen-Vettel similarities 'uncanny'

"It's quite uncanny really because there are an awful lot of similarities to when Sebastian joined the team. The mechanics were telling me even the way he gets in the car is similar, from the same side, the way he pulls his knee up to get into the chassis and so on," Horner said.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner described the similarities between Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel as "uncanny".

Verstappen wowed the Formula 1 world on Sunday, taking advantage after Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg crashed out in the first lap to seal a sensational victory at the Spanish GrandPrix.

The 18-year-old became the youngest winner of a grand prix - beating the mark set by Vettel - in his first race for Red Bull, having been promoted from sister team Toro Rosso as a replacement for Daniil Kvyat.

Verstappen held off the Ferrari duo of Kimi Raikkonen and Vettel for his triumph, and Horner believes there are startling comparisons between his driver and the German, who won four successive world titles at Red Bull between 2010 and 2013.

"It's quite uncanny really because there are an awful lot of similarities to when Sebastian joined the team," said Horner, in quotes reported by AutoSport.

"The mechanics were telling me even the way he gets in the car is similar, from the same side, the way he pulls his knee up to get into the chassis and so on.

"There are some similarities there but he's his own man as well. He's a very together young guy. You would never think he was 18.

"Max is the first driver I've had where legally I can be his father. He's been hugely impressive, everything we've seen so far from him."

Asked where Verstappen can go from here, Horner replied: "To come in and qualify on the second row and win your first Grand Prix, it can only get worse!

"I suspect he'll get stronger as he gets more experienced, more familiar with the car and his confidence will grow."
