Italian motorcycling star Max Biaggi was flown to hospital on Friday after suffering injuries in a "serious" accident at the Sagittario race circuit south of Rome, according to reports.

Biaggi was racing alongside two riders from the team of which he is the manager when the accident occurred on Friday morning.

According to a website report by Gazzetta dello Sport , the former two-time world Superbike champion suffered chest injuries and is undergoing a series of tests at the San Camillo di Roma hospital. The report added that Biaggi is conscious.

The incident comes less than a fortnight after the death of American Superbike star Nicky Hayden from injuries suffered while training on a road racing bike in Italy.
