Haas driver Romain Grosjean and Jolyon Palmer of Renault have been handed five-place grid penalties after ignoring yellow flags during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday.

After Sauber's Antonio Giovinazzi crashed at the end of Q1, Grosjean and Palmer were deemed to have "attempted to set a meaningful lap time" while the yellow flags were being shown in Shanghai.

The drivers have also had three penalty points added to their license and Grosjean and Palmer now start 19th and 20th on the grid respectively, with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon of Force India each profiting by moving up the grid.

Lewis Hamilton will start on pole for Mercedes after breaking the Shanghai lap record with a time of one minute 31.678 seconds to edge out Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel for first place, while the second row will be made up of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen.
