There are ten qualification places per gender in both the Kumite and Kata categories.

The four (4) highest ranked athletes per gender and Olympic event in the Olympic Standing

as of 6 April 2020 will be allocated one (1) quota place respecting the maximum quota per NOC.

Qualification:

Olympic Standing as of 6 April, 2020 — 16 men and 16 women; 4 athletes per category

Qualification tournament, Paris [8 to 10 May, 2020] — 12 men and 12 women; 3 athletes per category

Each NOC will have the opportunity to register one athlete for each of the eight categories, with exception to any category where they already have an athlete qualified for

Tokyo 2020 through the Olympic Standing of 6 April 2020. Athletes already qualified will not be allowed to participate.

Continental representation — 12 athletes; 3 per category

A total of twelve quota places will be available for continental representation with a maximum of three per Olympic category. (Maximum of ten qualification places per gender per event)

The European Games, 14-30 June 2019, Minsk (Belarus) and the Pan-American Games, 26 July-11 August 2019, Lima (Peru) will serve as qualification events.
