Star India shuttler P.V. Sindhu advanced to the knockout stage after her win over NY Cheung at the Tokyo Olympics.

Hello and welcome to Sportstar's Live Coverage of Day 6 of the Tokyo Olympics where star Indian athletes like P.V. Sindhu, Deepika Kumari will be in action.

BADMINTON: Sai Praneeth goes down to Mark Caljouw (WR 29)14-21, 14-21 to finish last (3rd) in his  Group.

  • Deepika advances to the Round of 16 with a 6-4 victory over Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez. Deepika manages a 9,9 and 8. Jennifer musters 8, 8 in the first two shots and needed a 10 to tie the fifth set for a shootoff, but manages only an eight. A very close match but the Indian comes through unscathed.
  • Deepika shoots a 6 with the second arrow to let Jennifer make a comeback. The American wins the fourth set 25-24 to take it to the deciding set. The match is tied 4-4. (Deepika - 9,6,9; Jennifer - 9,8, 8)
  • Deepika rises to the challenge with a 10 in the first arrow, gets a 9 and 8 in the next two. The American needed a 10 to win the match, but could manage only a 7. Deepika wins the third set 27-25 for a 4-2 lead.
  • Deepika wins the second set with two 10s after beginning with an 8. Jennifer shoots 9, a poor 7 and ends the set with a 9. Score: 28-25. The match is currently tied 2-2.
  • The Indian begins with a poor 7 in her first shot. Deepika manages 9 and 9 in the next two, but USA's Jennifer wins the first set 26-25 with shots of 9,10,7. Score: 26-25

Archery:  Deepika Kumari faces USA's Jennifer Fernandez in the Round of 32.

Boxing: Women's middleweight: Round of 16: Pooja Rani vs Ichrak Chaib

  • Pooja Rani wins 5-0 in a unanimous verdict and is through to the quarterfinals in the women's middleweight category. She is a win away from securing a medal for India.
  • The Algerian is trying her best to get some punches in. A last-ditch effort to knock the Indian out, but Pooja is holding her ground and counter-punching cleanly.  The game ends with both the boxers on the mat after losing their balance. Pooja again gets a unanimous 5-0 decision in her favour in the third round.
  • Pooja follows in the same vein. She has been moving well to the sides and waiting to counter punch. She has been quite successful with her strategy so far. Algerian goes on the offensive in the last 30 seconds. She is trying to make up for the inital sluggisness. But is it too little too late?  The second round also goes to Pooja. It is a unanimous verdict again from the five judges.
  • Algerian loses her balance and slips to the floor. Pooja Rani has managed a few clean jabs on the face. A southpaw, Pooja has been the dominant boxer so far in the first round. She applauds herself as the bell goes off. She seems confident.  As expected, Pooja Rani gets a unanimous verdict from the judges. Round 1 to Pooja.
  • Pooja Rani has entered the ring. She is maintaining a calm demeanor.

We have a busy half an hour with three Indians in action. In Boxing, Pooja Rani will begin her campaign against Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in the women's middleweight category. Sai Praneeth is up against Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands in an inconsequential match for the Indian. Sai will not qualify for the knockouts even if he wins. Deepika Kumari will be back in action at 14:53 IST for her Round of 16 match.

  • Deepika advances to the Round of 32 with an easy 6-0 win over Bhutan's Karma. It wasn't a top-class performance from the Indian but Karma had a poor outing and that was enough for Deepika to sail into the next round.
  • Finally, a 10 from Deepika in the third set. Karma gets a 10 in her last shot but a 6,8 in the first two shots didn't help her cause. Deepika shoots 9,10, 8 and seals the match with a 6-0 win.
  • No 10 from either of the archers yet. Deepika pockets the second set with a similar scoreline 26-23. Deepika has a series of 8,9,9 while Karma shoots 7,7,9. Karma is ranked No. 193 while Deepika is currently the World No. 1
  • Deepika begins with an 8, so does Karma. Deepika wins the first set comfortably 26-23. Deepika shoots 8,9,9 while Karma manages a series of 8,6,9.
  • The Round of 64 clash between Deepika Kumari and Karma is about to begin.
  • Deepika Kumari will face Bhutan's Karma in the women's individual Round of 64 at 14:14 IST today.
  • Atanu Das is scheduled to begin his knockout round tomorrow at 7.31 IST against Chinese Taipei's Yu-Cheng Deng.
  • Pravin Jadhav's challenge ends with a 6-0 loss to World No. 1 Ellison Brady.  It was a poor third set from the Indian with scores of 8,8 and 7. Brady, with 8,9,9 comfortably sealed his place in the pre-quarterfinals.
  • Pravin starts strong with a 10. The second arrow is a contentious 9. Will it be 10 or 9? That will decide the fate of the second set. The judges decide it's a nine. Ellison Brady wins the second set 27-26. Brady hit 8,10,9 while Jadhav had 10,9 and 7. Elison leads the match 4-0.
  • Ellison Brady takes the first set 28-27. An 8 with the second arrow proves to be the downfall of Pravin Jadhav in the first set. He finished strong with a 10.
  • The challenge gets tougher for Pravin Jadhav as he will face World No. 1 Ellison Brady of USA in the Round of 32.  The match is scheduled for 13:22 IST. Brady Ellison is Rio Olympics bronze medallist in the individual event.
  • Pravin Jadhav wins. Pravin Jadhav advances to the Round of 32 with a 6-0 win over ROC's Galsan Bazarzhapov. Pravin gets 9,9,10 for a total of 28 while Galzan could only muster a series of 8,7,9 for 24 in the third set.  It's a big upset as Galsan is ranked World No. 2.
  • Galsan makes a strong comeback with 10,10 but gets a 7 in the last arrow. Pravin starts with 9, 9 but gets a 10 in the last arrow to seal the second set. The ROC archer gave a window of opportunity and Pravin grabbed it both the hands. The Indian leads 4-0 at the end of two sets.

Badminton

  • Sindhu wins to qualify for knockouts
  • Game 2 (21-16): The second game saw Sindhu play aggressively and forced Cheung into a defensive mode as the Indian took a four-point lead at 6-2. However, Cheung narrowed the margin as the drew level at 6-6 and for the first time in the match, Sindhu looked a bit under pressure but soon unleashed a terrific smash to the right of her opponent and was once again in the lead. Cheung was however quick to take the lead as the players took a break with the Indian traling 10-11. It was a tight fight from there on as both players didn't leave an inch and kept drawing level with short rallies. A missed opportunity to put the shuttle across to the right of Sindhu and an unforced error by Cheung saw the Indian take a two-point lead. Sindhu then took control by exhibiting some high quality defence and earned six game points at 20-14. Sindhu, eventually won the match with a smash to enter the knockout stage of the tournament.
  • Game 1 (21-9): Cheung started the proceedings and pocketed the first points but soon Sindhu drew level and took a three-point lead at 6-3. Having found her rhythm, Sindhu played her diognal cross-court shots beautifully and used her smashes to good effect. The control was impeccable and soon the Indian increased the lead to 10-3. Sindhu dictated terms after the first break and a couple of unforced errors didn't had any bearings on the Indian with some deceptive touches kept Cheung at bay. Sindhu exhibited a range of shots from making her opponent play near the net and then exploiting the empty area of the back and sending the shuttle right into the corner. With 11 Game points, Sindhu completed the formalities to win the first set 21-9.
