Gymnastics have been contested at every Summer Olympics since the birth of the modern movement at the Athens Games in 1896, and remains one of the most popular sports to this day.
Since its integration into the Games in 1984 in Los Angeles, rhythmic gymnastics has been a part of the Olympic programme. Only one individual event was on the programme till 1988. The second, a team event, was added to the programme in 1996 in Atlanta.
