Tokyo Olympics 2020, Hockey highlights: Australia thrashes India 7-1

Tokyo Olympics 2021 score: Here are all the commentary updates from the Summer Games as the Indian men's national hockey team squared off against Australia on Sunday.

This is Dominic Richard taking you through all the action as it unfurled at the Oi Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

Tomorrow, Indian women's national hockey team will take on Germany at 5:45 PM IST.

Australia could have scored more but it ended up winning by six goals. India will next face Spain in a Pool A encounter at 6:30 AM IST on Tuesday (July 27), while Australia is set to square off against Argentina on the same day, half an hour early.

The Aussies made it 4-0 in the second quarter. India pulled a goal back through Dilpreet Singh in the third. However, Australia kept pushing hard as India's defence crumbled under pressure. The score eventually became 7-1 in the 51st minute.

It was just 1-0 in favour of Australia in the first quarter. A crucial Andrew Ogilvie goalline clearance during an Indian penalty corner in the 15th minute seemed priceless at the time. But things completely changed after the opening 15 minutes.

THE GAME COMES TO AN END! AUSTRALIA BEATS INDIA 7-1!!!

60' India hasn't had one proper attacking move this quarter. Australia has dominated the possession. One final move forward for the Aussies but the score stays 7-1.

57' Surprisingly, India leads the circle penetrations stat with 24 to Australia's 22. The defending and finishing have been the biggest differences between the two teams today.

54' Australia looks like scoring an eighth anytime here. India is totally deflated. The team's defenders, who had a brilliant game against New Zealand, have zero composure now and they are getting constantly dispossessed.

51' GOOOAAALLL!!!! AUSTRALIA 7 - 1 INDIA! Tim Brand received a long pass from midfield. He controlled the ball well, dribbled past Sreejesh and beat the last man Birendra Lakra to extend his side's lead.

48' INJURY! PR Sreejesh goes down to the ground following a collision with an Australian player. However, he is fine to continue.

THE FOURTH AND FINAL QUARTER STARTS!

A double from Blake Govers has added to India's woes. Australia looks like a sure shot gold-medal contender in Tokyo this year.

45' India getting dispossessed way too often now. Australia is pressing high despite having a 6-1 lead. This shows why the team is ranked number one in the world.

42' ANOTHER GOOAAALLL!!!!! AUSTRALIA 6 - 1 INDIA!!! This was yet another Australian PC. Blake Govers came up with the flick. An initial save was made but Indian keeper Sreejesh inadvertently knocked the ball into his own net.

40' GOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! AUSTRALIA HAS A 5-1 LEAD NOW! India's Surender Kumar blocked a sure shot goal attempt from the Australians and the referee awarded a penalty stroke. Blake Govers scored by sending Sreejesh the wrong way.

39' PC FOR INDIA! India's success with video referrals continues as Harmanpreet gets ready for a penalty corner. He releases a flick and Mandeep Singh tries to deflect it on target. But he misses by a whisker.

37' India suddenly looks like the better of the two sides. What a difference a goal can make. Australia has been committing a few errors.

34' GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! INDIA MAKES IT 1-4!! Rupinder Pal Singh just slammed the ball towards goal from long. It missed several Australian players before reaching Dilpreet Singh, who got the slightest of touches to beat goalkeeper Andrew Charter.

33' India is wasting PC after PC. Rupinder Pal Singh isn't able to connect properly. Maybe it's time for Harmanpreet Singh to take over.

32' PENALTY CORNER FOR INDIA! An extremely poor penlaty corner routine from the Indians as Australia regains possession.

THE THIRD QUARTER BEGINS!

Goals from Daniel James Beale, Jeremy Thomas Hayward, Flynn Andrew Ogilvie and Joshua Beltz have flattened India. Australia just can't lose this match from here.

THE SECOND QUARTER IS DONE AND DUSTED!

29' CHANCE FOR INDIA! Nilakanta Sharma sends a slick pass towards Dilpreet during an Indian counter-attack. But the Australian defence tracks back in time to avert the danger.

26' A GOAL AGAIN!!! AUSTRALIA 4 - 0 INDIA!! Joshua Beltz gets his name on the scoresheet now. However, Tim Brand did all the hard work on the left flank. He kept running and slipped a pass towards Beltz. Indian defender Amit Rohidas was so close to the ball. He could have cleared it.

23' GOOOAAAALLLL!!!!!! AUSTRALIA HAS A 3-0 LEAD! India has completely lost the plot here. The Australians look like scoring every time they go forward. Andrew Ogilvie's delightful finish beats Indian goalie PR Sreejesh this time.

21' GOOOAAAALLLL!!!! AUSTRALIA TAKES A 2-0 LEAD NOW! The penalty-corner specialist Jeremy Hayward comes up with a brilliant drag flick to extend his team's advantage.

20' Australian midfielder Trent Mitton sprints forward with the ball. But he isn't able to supply a proper cross into the middle from the left flank.

17' Vivek Sagar Prasad with some brilliant movement in midfield. The youngster takes a shot from long. But there are no sticks up front to divert the ball into goal.

THE SECOND QUARTER IS UNDERWAY!

James Beale's solitary goal is the difference between the two teams after the opening 15 minutes.

THE FIRST QUARTER COMES TO AN END!

15' PC FOR INDIA! Rupinder Pal Singh flicks the ball towards goal this time. But Andrew Ogilvie makes a goalline clearance for Australia.

13' CHANCE FOR INDIA! Dilpreet Singh rushes forward but he isn't able to find a teammate or take a shot himself from close range.

10' GOAALLLLLL!!!! AUSTRALIA TAKES A 1-0 LEAD!! Jacob Whetton received the ball inside the box and he took a lethal shot. James Beale put his stick in the way to deflect the ball into goal.

8' PENALTY CORNER FOR INDIA! The ball finds the back of the net but the goal from a rebound isn't awarded to India since Harmanpreet Singh didn't get his first flick on target.

5' The Australian substitute Thomas Sharp enters the Indian 'D', but once again the opposition defence clears the danger without conceding a penalty corner.

3' Tim Brand goes on a move forward on the right flank. He wins a free hit close to goal but isn't able to capitalise on it.

1' EARLY ATTEMPT FROM AUSTRALIA! Andrew Ogilvie tries to find a teammate with quick pass up front. But the ball goes out of play.

India names an unchanged XI from yesterday's 3-2 win over New Zealand. Meanwhile, Andrew Ogilvie comes in to replace Joseph Wickham in the Australian line-up, which started the 5-3 victory against Japan.

India beat New Zealand (NZL) 3-2 in a Pool A men's hockey match at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday. A brace from Harmanpreet Singh and crucial saves in the end from PR Sreejesh carried India into the next round. Rupinder Pal Singh also scored a penalty.
