Swimming:  Sajan Prakash finished second in Heat 2 of the men's 100m butterfly event with a timing of 53.45s, behind Abeku Jackson of Ghana who clocked 53.39s. But he is out of reckoning for a place in the semifinals. It was close to his personal best time of 53.27 which he achieved at the Belgrade Trophy Swimming Championships but nearly not enough to make the semifinals. Caeleb Dressel holds the world record in the event with a timing of 49.50, nearly four seconds lesser than the Indian's mark. On Thursday, he equalled the Olympic record in the heats by clocking 50.39. Sajan Prakash was placed 46th overall at the end of the heats.

Boxing: Valencia makes her way to the ring followed by Mary Kom. The boxers get their headgears on and the checks are complete. Ingrit comes out firing form her corner. Kom's defence put under test by Valencia, who is quicker with her punches. Valencia has the higher scores in the opening round with 4 10s and a 9, while Kom gets 4 9s and a 10.

We are into round 2. Kom lands a left-arm jab and Valencia needs to get her headgear readjusted. Kom has come out on the front foot but Valencia is quicker on her feet. Both boxers are cancelling out each other. End of an engrossing second round and it's Valencia in the lead again.

Third round begins. Kom lands a right-hand punch! Valencia has been on the defence in the third round. And that's the end of the contest with both boxers having a hold of each other. Valencia seems confident at the end of the bell. We await the scores now. Valencia is declared the winner 3-2 and Mary kom is knocked out in the round of 16.

Is that the last time we see India's boxing legend Mary Kom at an Olympics? If so, she went out fighting against a superior opponent. Valencia was quicker on the feet and with her punches.

Badminton: PV Sindhu vs Mia Blichfeldt - Sindhu wins to enter quarters

  • Game 2 (21-13)- Sindhu wins! Having taken the lead, Sindhu didn't let the advantage slip away. The Indian was quick to extend the lead by five points and kept dominating the rallies as Blichfeldt was just playing catch-up. Sindhu earned nine match points and soon closed the game to enter the quarterfinals in the Women's Singles.
  • Game 2: Blichfeldt tried to stretch Sindhu and the Indian was up for the challenge despite conceding a couple of points but continued to lead. At the break, a dominant Sindhu was leading at 11-6 and favourite to enter the quarters.
  • Game 2 In the start of the second Game, Sindhu raced to a 5-0 lead and winning the first one certainly boosted the India's confidence.
  • Game 1 (21-15): Having gained the momentum, the Indian kept picking points and further increased the gap with a six-point lead. Blichdeldt crawled back into the game by targetting the left side of Sindhu, where the Indian was vulnerable in returning the backhand strokes and went on to close the gap. Sindhu challenged once in the game but lost it as the shuttle was out. Blichdelft with two excellent smashes down the line pushed Sindhu on the defensive as both players used the depth of the court to score points with the Indian taking a slender lead. The Indian earned five game points at 20-15 and closed it soon to win Game 1 21-15.
  • Game 1: From 6-3, Sindhu pressed advantage and with brilliant anticipation of where the shuttle will land kept the Blichfeldt at bay and varied her well pace well to maintain a five-point lead at 10-5.
  • Game 1: Blichfeldt started with a two-point lead and it took a little while for Sindhu to draw level and there was some sort of turedness in the Indian and understandably as it was just yesterday that she played her match against Cheung Ngan Yi to book her place in the knockouts.
  • Sidhu, the sixth seed will be up against the Denmark shuttler who is seeded 13th.
  • We are just five minutes away from the schedule start of play.
  • This will be the match of the day as the Rio silver medallist will aim to get past Blichfeldt and secure a place in the quarters.
