Hello and welcome to Sportstar's Live coverage of the Tokyo Olympics  as the action moves into Day 8, July 30 with the focus on Indian athletes.

 

India Results on July 30

  • Lovlina Borgohain assured Olympic medal, storms into women's welterweight semifinal
  • Archer Deepika Kumari enters quarterfinals
  • Avinash Sable created a new national record in the men's 3000m steeplechase heats. Fails to qualify
  • Boxer Simranjit Kaur gets knocked out
  • Sprinter Dutee Chand finishes 7th, 45th overall in 100m Heats. Fails to qualify
  • Deepika Kumari loses to An San 0-6 and crashes out of Tokyo Olympics
  • India finishes last in the 4x400m mixed team relay.
  • Sailor Vishnu Saravanan stuns the fleet with a third-place finish in Race 9 for an overall 20th place finish in the laser standard class. Nethra Kumanan finished her campaign placed 35th overall.
  • Fouaad Mirza and Seigneur Medicott finish day 1 of Equestrian eventing in 7th position in the standings, with 28.00 points.

LIVE UPDATES

  • India finishes last in the 4x400m mixed team relay by clocking 3:19.93s. Poland finished first by clocking 3:10.44s, nearly nine seconds ahead of India. Muhammed Anas, who did the first leg, was India's best performer as he was the seventh to pass the baton to Revathi. The TN athlete began well, charging to the sixth place but fell apart in the final phase of the leg and was the last to pass on the baton to Subha who also couldn't make much gains in the third leg. Arokia Rajiv couldn't have done much as India finished four seconds slower than the seventh-placed Brazil.  But then, Poland set a continental record while four countries set new national records. Brazil, in fact, also set a new continental record.
  • Team USA and Dominican Republic suffered disqualification in Heat 1. 
  • Heat 1 saw Belgium, Ireland and Germany take the top three spots. 

Athletics: The mixed 4x400m relay is about to get underway. India's V. Revathi, Subha Venkatesan, Arokiya Rajiv, Sarthak Bhambri will be in action in Heat 2. The top three from each heat and the next two fastest teams will advance to the final.

Golf: Anirban Lahiri couldn't complete 18 holes in Round 2 as play was interrupted due to weather conditions in Tokyo. He is currently tied 20 and has played 16 holes in the second round.

Equestrian: Fouaad Mirza and Seigneur Medicott finish day 1 of Equestrian eventing in 7th position in the standings, with 28.00 points. Mirza is tied with Sweden's Louise Romeike. Britain's Oliver Townend, ranked number one in the world, leads the standings with 23.60 points. 42/63 rider-horse combinations have performed at the dressage event. The remaining pairs will perform on Saturday morning to then finalise the interim leader board after the dressage stage.

Equestrian: Fouaad Mirza begins proceedings in the second dressage session for the day in Tokyo. Mirza and Seigneur Medicott start clinically, getting 28 penalty points in all. The duo managed scores of 70.45%, 73.18% and 72.50% from the three judges to enter standings in the sixth position. Britain's Oliver Townend, the top seed, leads the standings with just 23.60 penalty points incurred. His compatriot Laura Collett and her horse London 52 entered the standings in fifth place with a sublime dressage session amounting to 25.80 penalty points. This pushed Mirza to seventh place.

In case you're wondering how to make sense of the scoring - the simple rule is, lower the penalty points, better you are placed.

Sailing: In the women's laser radial class , Nethra Kumanan finished 37th and 38th in Race 9 and 10, respectively. She finishes overall 35th after calculating her best nine results. She will not feature in the medal race on August 1 as only the Top 10 qualify.

In the men's laser standard class, Vishnu Saravanan finished a fabulous 3rd place in Race 9 before settling for a 15th place finish in Race 10. He finished a creditable 20th in the overall list but will not qualify for the medal race.

In the 49er class, India's KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar finished Race 7 at 17th place, Race 8 at 11th and Race 9 at 16th. The Indian pair is currently placed 16th overall and three races remain before the medal event. 

Archery: GOLD: An San, who defeated Deepika Kumari in the quarterfinal, helps Korea keep its archery record intact with a thrilling win over ROC's Elina Osipova in a shootoff. Tied 5-5 at the end of five sets, An San gets a 10 in the shootoff. Osipova shoots an 8 to settle for silver. This is An San's third gold in Tokyo! She was part of the gold-winning women's team and mixed team as well!

Archery: Deepika Kumari loses to An San in quarters, out of Tokyo Olympics

Archery  - Deepika Kumari crashes out of Tokyo Olympics after losing 0-6 to An San in the quarterfinals

Set 3: 6-0: Deepika starts with a 7 as An San shoots a 8 . Deepika betters but shoots 8 and then An San gets 9, Deepika finishes with 9 and An San shoots 9 to win the set 26-24 and beats the World No.1 to enter the semifinals.

Set 2: 4-0 - Deepika starts with a 10 and An San with a 9 as Deepika shoots wide to get 7 but An San responds with a 10 and Deepika finishes with a 7. An San shoots 7 but wins the set 26-24

Set 1: 2-0 An San starts with a 10 and a poor start by Deepika as she shoots a 7. An San with another 10 and this time Deepika shoots a 10. Three 10s for An San and a second 10 for Deepika as An San wins the set 30-27.

Lovlina Borgohain assured of Olympic boxing medal after reaching semifinal

Athletics Update - India sprinter Dutee Chand finished 7th in Heat 5 of women's 100m event with a timing of 11.54. She finished 45th overall in the Heats to bow out of the 100m event. The top three from each heat out of total seven heats will qualify for the semifinals.

Round 3: Lovlina wins to assure India second Olympic medal. Lovlina Borgohain assured of an Olympic medal. The Indian boxer wins her bout 4-1 against Chen Nien-Chin and marches into the semifinal.

Round 2: Lovlina leads 3-2 The momentum with Lovlina, the Indian goes out on an attack and unleashes a brilliant left jab that pierces through her opponent and she is pumped up. With a minute to go in the second round, Lovlina and Chen engaged closely with Chen landing a couple of strong punches but Lovlina with her smart defensive technique kept her opponent at bay. 

Round 1: Lovlina wins first Round - Lovlina in Red and she is quick, engages in box and throws a right jab at her opponent. She is quick on her feet and lands a strong punch on the right and then follows it up with a left jab. Both of the boxers had their moments but Lovlina prevails to win 3:2 split decision.

Athletics Update: India's MP Jabir fails to qualify in the Men's 400m Hurdles in Round 1, Heat 5 . Jabir finished on 7th position with a timing of 50.77.

Boxing:  Sudaporn Seesondee wins 5-0 against Simranjit Kaur in Women's Lightweight Round of 16

Round 3: Simranjit knocked out - Having lost both the first rounds, Simranjit had to win to advance ahead but the Thai boxer was too heavt on her as a severe left jab on Simranjit ended the Indian's road at The Tokyo Olympics.

Simranjit loses Round 2: Simranjit goes out on full attack but the Thai boxer landed some heavy blows to corner the Indian. Seesondee wins Round 2 by unanimous decision.

Simranjit Loses Round 1: Boxer Simranjit Kaur is in action and she begins the first round on a goood, positive note. Good combination of the left and right hand but it's Seesondee who wins the first round by unanimous decision. 

Coming Up: Boxer Simranjit Kaur will face Thailand's Sudaporn Seesondee in Women's 60kg Round of 16 match and then Lovlina Borgohain will face off against Chinese Taipei's Nien-Chin Chen in Women's 69kg Quarterfinal.

Ace sprinter Dutee Chand will be in action in the women's 100m Round 1 Heats.

Golf Update: Udayan Mane is 60th, slips to two-over-par through the seventh hole. He's seven-over-par (overall)

Athletics Result: Avinash Sable finished in the seventh position in heat 2 of the men's 3000m steeplechase with a timing of 8.18.12s and he has broken the national record. His national record was at 8.20.20s which he created at the Federation Cup in Patiala earlier this year and Avinash bettered his own record in Tokyo. However, he failed to qualify for the final. 

Athletics: Avinash Sable gets India's athletics event underway as he is in action in the men's 3000m steeplechase heats.  The first three along with the next fastest six will qualify for the final.


Archery Update:
Deepika beats Perova to win Women's 1/8 Elimination Round and march into the quarterfinals. Having tied 5-5, the match went into the shoot-out where Deepika fired a perfect 10 to enter the quarters. Deepika Kumari to meet Korea's An San in the quarterfinals at 11:30 AM today.

Archery: Deepika Kumari is in action and she is up against Ksenia Perova of Russia in the Women's 1/8 Elimination Round. After winning the first set, Deepika lost the second set but comes back to win the third set. The Indian is leading 4-2.

 

The attention now shifts to Athletics where star Indian sprinters will be in action but boxer Lovlina Borgohain and archer Deepika Kumari will aim for podium finishes on Friday.  

 

It will also be a day where Fouaad Mirza, will make his Olympics debut in Equestrian. Also in action will be the Golfers and Archers.
