Despite missing out on a record-equalling fifth Tour title, the Kenya-born Briton is keen to ensure his dethroning is only temporary.

Chris Froome was proud of Geraint Thomas' Tour de France win, but he has no intention of stepping back as he plans to extend his period of dominance.

A run of three consecutive Grand Tour triumphs - claiming the prestigious Triple Crown - was ended by fellow Team Sky rider Thomas in Paris, with Froome forced to settle for third behind Tom Dumoulin.

Despite missing out on a record-equalling fifth Tour title, the Kenya-born Briton is keen to ensure his dethroning is only temporary.

Asked if he will be looking for a swift return to the top, Froome told ITV: "Very much so. The hunger's still there. I'm not going anywhere just yet.

"I've had a good run; three Grand Tour victories from the last three. To be on the podium here again has been tough work. I'm really glad to be able to take a break now.

"My wife Michelle is expecting a baby any day now, so I'm going to be home tomorrow and hopefully have some down time with the family. I'm really looking forward to that."

While Froome was not able to retain his crown in France, he could at least revel in a friend's glory - though questions will be asked over how long they can remain team-mates with Thomas proving himself a worthy leader.

"It's quite emotional to be standing on that podium with G," he said. "We're such good mates now. We have been for 10 years.

"To stand on the podium, with him on the top step of the Tour de France, it's amazing to see how far he's come."
