State owned GAIL (India)Limited has chosen 22 sportsmen and women in the country to support them financially and sponsor their advanced training. It has also envisaged to aid rising sportsmen and women from northeastern states.

“The GAIL has adopted sports promotion policy to encourage talents from different segments. We have so far selected 22 talents in the country”, Amit Ray, Executive Director (HR & HRD) of GAIL told newsmen at event felicitating rising young gymnast Asmita Paul in Agartala on Saturday.

He handed over a grant of Rs 2 lakhs to her as a support to fulfill her dreams of achieving glory. Besides, GAIL sanctioned a monthly stipend of Rs. 20,000 to her for a period of 245 months, which according to Mr Ray, can be extended further.

Class X grader Asmita has already made a mark in gymnastic world by winning several competitions in the state and country. She was a part of the Indian team at the World School Companionships in Turkey.

Dronacharya award winner Bishweshwar Nandi, coach of Olympian Dipa Karmakar, has also been training the rising star with a great hope of making her a world class gymnast. 15-year-old Asmita comes from a very poor family with her father a daily wage earner.

Amit Roy also felicitated Bishweshwar Nandi on the occasion. Tripura Natural Gas Company (TNGC), a subsidiary of the GAIL, has been supplying cooking gas through pipeline free of cost to houses of Dipa Karmakar, Bishweshwar Nandi and Asmita Paul as a mark of appreciation.
