Martin Kaymer believes he is closing in on a long-awaited win after an impressive start to the US PGA Championship. The German carded a four-under 66 in the opening round at Baltusrol on Thursday to be a shot behind leader Jimmy Walker. Kaymer, a two-time major champion, is without a tournament win since the 2014 U.S. Open, but feels he is nearing another trophy. "I think the last few weeks, I've been playing very solid golf," he said.
"I put myself up there to have a chance on the weekend, but unfortunately I didn't make enough putts over the weekend; and therefore, I could finish top 10, yes, a few times, which was fine. "But today, and the British Open, it was very similar. The first round I played solid and I made a few putts. Nothing major, but just a few putts that probably good putters make."And that was the biggest difference or the reason why I haven't won a tournament this year or that I wasn't even really close.
"And I think I'm really happy the way I hit the ball; that I don't make many mistakes. "It's very solid because I was working really hard to have a good summer this year. Slowly it's paying off, but result-wise, no. "We all want that win and that is what we all play for. Hopefully it will still happen." Kaymer had five birdies, including three in four holes between 15 and 18, and just one bogey in New Jersey.
The 31-year-old is comfortable at the course, which is hosting the event for the first time since 2005. Kaymer said: "I think I'm very glad that we go back to a golf course which is like an old-style course. "And it's amazing that they haven't changed much to when they played here 10, 11 years ago, and it's still very tricky, even though the equipment became a lot better and we hit the ball further and all those things."
