Maharashtra Sports Minister Ashish Shelar on Monday announced that an additional fund of Rs 50 lakh would be given to the athletes from the state who have qualified for the Olympics.

A media release issued by Shelar’s office said the minister made the announcement during a programme held at the Balewadi Sports complex in Pune.

According to it, the money will be given to the qualified athletes for preparation for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Sports Commissioner Omprakash Bakhoriya later informed PTI that so far only two athletes from the state, including ace shooter Rahi Sarnonbat (Kolhapur), have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.

Archer Pravin Jadhav, also from the state, is part of the Indian men’s re-curve team that has secured quota for the Tokyo Games.
