Rio Paralympic Games gold medallist T. Mariyappan hopes to create a record in high jump in the forthcoming World Championship to be held in London from July 14 to 23.

“With coach Satyanarayana assisting my preparation, I am looking to make a mark,” said Mariyappan, after attending a school sports meet here on Wednesday, while adding that he has been training hard in Delhi.

His main competitors are Varun Singh Bhati and Sam Grewe from USA. “They will be my main threats in the Worlds,” said the 21-year-old. Mariyappan said he has plans to travel to Ukraine for training before going to London.

Failures, said Mariyappan, are the stepping stones of success. “I’ve had my share of failures. I ask all students not to be scared and motivate themselves to achieve success,” he said.
