National Weightlifting: Services and Railways reign supreme

Services men finished on top with 621 points while Railways finished a close second at 615. Railways women were victorious with 544 points leaving Andhra Pradesh a distant second with 429.

Services men and Railways women emerged overall team champions of the National weightlifting championship at the Ponjesly College of Engineering here on Friday. Railways men and Andhra Pradesh women emerged runners up.

In the inter-state team championship, Maharashtra men's team was the overall champion while host Tamil Nadu was runner up.

Services men finished on top with 621 points while Railways finished a close second at 615. Railways women were victorious with 544 points leaving Andhra Pradesh a distant second with 429.

Maharashtra with 159 points and Tamil Nadu at 141 finished first and second respectively in the inter-state team championship.

On the final day, Himanshu K. Chang from Railways won the gold in the 105 kg+ category by lifting 363 kg (161 snatch and 202 clean & jerk).

For the first time in the senior National championship, in the 105 kg+ category, two players lifted 200 kg in the clean and jerk category.

In the women's 75+kg category, Monika from Haryana won the gold by lifting 201 kg.

S. Mirabai Chanu of Railways was declared the best lifter in the women's section while Sivalingam Sathish also from Railways won the best lifter award in the men's category.

Men: 105 kg+: 1. Himanshu.K. Chang (Railways) 363 (161+202); 2. Gurdeep Singh (Railways) 361 (161+200); 3. Jaspreet Singh (Pun) 344 (152+192).

Inter-state 105 kg+: 1. Jaspreet Singh (Pun) 344 (152+192); 2. Vipan Kumar (HP) 343 (152+191); 3. Sarabjit (Chandigarh) 325 (155+170).

Women: 75 kg+: 1. Monika (Har) 201 (90+111); 2. P.M. Kanchan (Kar) 198 (84+114); 3. Kh. Joshila Devi (AIPSCB) 197 (84+113).
