P. Anand clinched the first taekwondo gold for India in the u-87 kg category in the 12th South Asian Games, by defeating Afghanistan’s Ramesh Hossani in the final. India had to settle for silver in the u-54 Kg section as Abrar Khan lost to Afghanistan’s Mohsen Razaei.
Expectedly, Rohullah Nikpai, twice Olympic bronze medallist in taekwondo, bagged the gold medal in the u-68 category, defeating Naveed Khan of Pakistan in the final (technical knock-out).

Meanwhile, all Indian boxers entered the semifinals. The highlight of the day, however, was the return of India’s Sarita Devi to the bout. Playing her first International tournament after a lay-off, Sarita pulled off an emphatic win over Bangladesh’s Akter Saki in the lightfly category, outclassing the latter. The bout was called off within 40 seconds off the start of the first round, with the Asian Games bronze medallist landing a series of punches on the face of the Bangladeshi.
London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom has got a bye in the first round of the flyweight category, and will play Akter Shamina of Bangladesh in the semifinals.
