Contrary to common perception, magazines have registered handsome growth in the number of readers despite the phenomenal rise in the number of people reading digitally. As per the findings of the latest Indian Readership Survey (IRS) conducted by Nielsen for the Media Research Users Council (MRUC), magazines gained 90 lakh more readers and now have a combined total readership of 8.7 crore.
Sportstar, in particular, has seen an increase in total readership of 17.02% to reach 34,37,000 in IRS 2019 Q1 as compared to 29,37,000 readers in IRS 2017. Among the top 20 magazines, which includes both English and other languages, Sportstar is ranked 11th in terms of number of total readership.
Among English language magazines, Sportstar is the third largest in terms of total readership after India Today English and General Knowledge Today.
“The data is robust and representative of the diversity and heterogeneity of our wonderful country. Overall media consumption and print in particular is vibrant and growing. Most stakeholders should be encouraged with this snapshot of how India is consuming media and print,” said Vikram Sakhuja, Group CEO Madison Media & OOH and Chairman IRS Technical Committee while releasing the findings.
