Cricket:
Ravichandran Ashwin bagged the ICC's top award as he was named the Cricketer of the Year on Thursday for his impressive performance throughout the year. He ended the year with 48 wickets and scoring 336 runs from eight Tests. He also became the third Indian to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy after Rahul Dravid in 2004 and Sachin Tendulkar in 2010. Ashwin also grabbed the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award. He became the second Indian after Dravid, to have clinched ICC’s two top-most awards in the same year.
Tennis:
Women's tennis star and two-time Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, was stabbed in her left hand by a knife wielding burglar at her home on Tuesday in the Czech town of Prostejov. The police has launched a manhunt, looking for the crime suspect. Kvitova was supposed to play in a charity match on Tuesday. Kvitova underwent surgery and is likely to be out of action for six months. However, the surgery went well for the tennis star and in a press conference she said that she was able to >move her left hand fingers .
Luge:
India's seasoned Winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan clinched his third gold medal at the Asian Luge Championship on Friday. Keshavan dominated the whole race, finishing the second heat race with a time of 1 minute, 39.962 seconds and top speed of 130.4 km/h. Earlier this week, he had suffered a sudden crash during practice, damaging his left foot tendon. As a result, he missed some part of the official training before the main event.
"I am so happy that I cannot express myself. India has one more medal in her hand. The competition was not easy but I had to make it," Keshavan said over a telephonic conversation from Japan.
Football:
Supercoppa Italiana : AC Milan lifted the Italian Super Cup, the first trophy the Rossoneri have won since 2011, after Gianluigi Donnarumma's save from Paulo Dybala secured a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Juventus at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha on Friday. Both the teams finished 1-1 after the extra time, shifting the climax for the penalty shoot-out.
Juventus had taken the lead in 18th minute after Giorgio Chiellini converted Miralem Pjanic's corner into the net, but it drew level just before half-time when Giacomo Bonaventura glanced home a Fernandez Suso cross. It is the second time Milan has defeated Juventus, which leads Serie A by four points, this season.
Bundesliga: Bayern Munich's produced a ruthless 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday night, extending its dominance with acquiring the top position in the Bundesliga. A quick-fire double strike from Spanish midfielders Thiago and Xabi Alonso put Bayern in control before thirty minutes. Leipzig after that was reduced to 10-men when Emil Forsberg was sent off for a ferocious tackle on Philipp Lahm.
Later, on the stroke of half-time, Robert Lewandowski converted from the penalty spot for his 12th Bundesliga goal of the campaign giving Bayern a dominant 3-0 lead in the first half making sure for Bayern to clinch three crucial points and enter the winter break with a top spot in the league.
Premier League: Sadio Mane's four minutes into stoppage time strike, gave Liverpool a last-gasp 1-0 win over its derby rivals Everton, lifting them into second place in the Premier League on Monday night. Substitute Daniel Sturridge smashed a left-footed drive and Mane being the quickest to the rebound, slided in to convert from close range. The victory pushed Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side within six points of leaders Chelsea, which won 1-0 at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Transfer: The 25-year-old Chelsea star, Oscar, becomes the latest top player in his prime to feature in the mega-rich Chinese Super League. Oscar has agreed on terms for a reported 70.5 million euros with Shanghai SIPG on what will be China's fifth Asian-record signing in less than a year. He is due to finalise the deal in Shanghai in a few days time, said the Chinese club, which is coached by the former Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas.
On the other hand, Germany's attacking midfielder Julian Draxler is set to join the top French Ligue club, Paris Saint-Germain from Wolfsburg in a deal reportedly worth up to 47 million euros. Wolfsburg has clarified that the 23-year-old will sign a four-and-a-half-year deal from January first after his medical. Draxler joined Wolfsburg from Schalke in August 2015, but he did not prove to be impressive,scoring five goals in 34 league games for Wolfsburg.
