Weekly digest (Jan 15 to 21): From India's loss in Centurion to Fleetwood winning Abu Dhabi Open Golf

A round-up of all that happened in the world of sports over the last seven days.

CRICKET

South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 in the three-Test series against India, by winning the second Test in Centurion by 135 runs. This is now Virat Kohli's first-ever series defeat in any format as India captain. (REPORT)

England sealed the ODI series by winning the first three ODIs against Australia, winning each of them in convincing fashion too. This has been an emphatic response, albeit under a different captain and with a largely different set of players, after losing the Ashes 4-0. (Third ODI report)

India beat arch-rival Pakistan and lifted the Blind Cricket World Cup for the second time. (Report)

Virat Kohli, courtesy his fighting 153 in the first innings of the second Test, became just the second Indian batsman to reach the 900-point mark in the ICC rankings for batsmen. (FULL STORY)

The Indian captain was also named the captain of the ICC ODI and Test teams. (REPORT)

Elsewhere, New Zealand completed an ODI series whitewash against Pakistan and Zimbabwe secured another win in an ODI against Sri Lanka in the ongoing tri-nation series against Bangladesh.

FOOTBALL

The football news that dominated the headlines was mainly transfer related, with Alexis Sanchez's reported move to Manchester United becoming more concrete and moving closer to completion (REPORT).

Borussia Dortmund confirmed receiving a bid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was dropped from its matchday squads against Hertha Berlin and Wolfsburg.

Barcelona brought a long-standing winless run at the Estadio Anoeta by beating Real Sociedad 4-2 in LaLiga, though it lost the first-leg of the Copa del Rey tie against Espanyol.

Real Madrid bounced back from a difficult week by putting together back to back wins in the Copa del Rey and league, against Leganes and Deportivo La Coruna respectively.

Another European giant Bayern Munich continued its winning streak with a 4-2 win against Weder Bremen. The Bavarian giant also secured a pre-contract agreement with Schalke's Leon Goretzka, who will officially become its player on July 1. (Full story)

Paris Saint-Germain put eight past Dijon in Ligue 1, with Neymar scoring four goals in the rout. (REPORT)

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United secured victories on matchweek 24 of the ongoing Premier League season, with Tottenham Hotspur only managing a draw against Southampton.

The week gone by was a goal-laden one in the Indian Super League, with as many as 22 goals being scored in six matches, FC Goa, FC Pune City Jamshedpur FC, North East United FC, and Bengaluru FC the victors which outscored their opposition. The first week at Melbourne Park threw up many an interesting result, with Venus Williams, Garbine Muguruza, Maria Sharapova, Sloane Stephens Juan Martin del Potro, Nick Kyrgios, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga among the tournament heavyweights who exited the tournament at various stages. GOLF

England's Tommy Fleetwood successfully defended his Abu Dhabi Championship, edging compatriot Ross Fisher by two shots. (REPORT)

BASKETBALL

Karnataka women finished top of Group A by beating Tamil Nadu in the 68th Senior National Basketball Championship, while Punjab was among the teams that posted wins.

MOTORSPORT

55-year-old Spaniard, Carlos Sainz secured overall victory in the 2018 Dakar Rally, with Nasser Al-Attiyah and Giniel de Villiers finishing second and third respectively. (REPORT)

BADMINTON

Denmark's Viktor Axelsen won the Malaysia Masters by beating Japanese Kenta Nishimoto in the final. (REPORT)

TABLE TENNIS

Snehit of Hyderabad achieved a career-best world No. 24 in the International Table Tennis world junior (under-18) rankings. (REPORT)

CHESS

Viswanathan Anand (4.5 points) was joint-sixth with five rounds to go at the Tata Steel Chess, having lost to Russia's Vladimir Kramnik in the seventh round and drawn with Peter Svidler, also of Russia, in the eighth.

ATHLETICS

Solomon Deksisa of Ethiopia won the men's title at the Mumbai Marathon 2018, clocking 2h 9m 34s and finishing 26 seconds ahead of compatriot Shumet Akalnaw. (REPORT)

HOCKEY

India lost the final of the Four Nations Invitational Hockey tournament to Belgium by 1-2, with Mandeep Singh the goal-scorer for India. (REPORT)
