Katie Ledecky's performances in the pool have often been described as 'out of this world', so it is perhaps no surprise that Buzz Aldrin sees astronaut potential in the teenage swimming phenomenon.

The holder of multiple world records, Ledecky has claimed two gold medals at Rio 2016 and will aim to secure a third in the women's 4x200m freestyle, which rounds off Wednesday's action at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre.

Aldrin, the second person to walk on the moon in 1969, has been an interested onlooker after travelling out to Brazil for the Games. On Wednesday, he was asked which athlete would make a good astronaut.

Speaking courtesy of Omega, the 86-year-old replied: "I don't know that many ... Katie Ledecky? She's already exhibited pretty good talent."

Nevertheless, Aldrin does not expect Ledecky to step away from the pool any time soon.

"I don't think she wants to retire from that business," he added with a smile.
