Day 11 round-up: Biles falls short in pursuit of gymnastics history

Simone Biles, after slipping on the beam, had to settle for a bronze medal. Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk sets a new world record in the hammer throw.

USA gymnast Simone Biles stumbled during her routine on the beam.

- Simone Biles stumbles on balance beam as her attempt to win a record five gymnastics golds in a single Olympic Games goes up in smoke, leaving her to settle for bronze. 

- Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk sets a new world record in the hammer throw, storming to gold with an effort of 82.29 metres.

- Ruth Jebet takes 3000m steeplechase gold for Bahrain, but misses out on a world record time by slowing up towards the end of the race.

- Controversy in 10 kilometre swim as Aurelie Muller is stripped of silver medal for 'dunking' rival Rachele Bruni at the line. Sharon van Rouwendaal wins gold.

"After the world record I felt an explosion of happiness," the record-breaking Wlodarczyk   said. "It was my mum's birthday today so it is such a gift that she is here today."

"My goal is the world record. If you come out with that then you get the gold medal." - Christian Taylor lays down the gauntlet after needing just a single (hop, skip and a...) jump to reach the triple jump final.

Wayde van Niekerk preceded Usain Bolt's 100m hat-trick on Sunday with a world-record 400m win. The Jamaican star now wants to take down the South African in a special race: "I would really like to compete against him over 300m, that would be good."

Great Britain kept their hold on second place in the medal table as Charlotte Dujardin took gold in the individual dressage, her country's 250th gold medal at summer Games. 

COMING UP

David Rudisha will defend his 800m title, with a tough year behind him in which he has often been beaten. Allyson Felix headlines the women's 400m final, while medals are on offer in boxing, wrestling and the men's omnium cycling.

She insisted pre-Games that she had no thoughts of retirement but we may have seen the last of two-time Olympic champion over 200m Veronica Campbell-Brown after she failed to make it out of today's heats.
