New Zealand was beaten by Fiji in a blockbuster men's rugby sevens quarter-final as Great Britain also reached the last four.

Tries from Osea Kolinisau and Jerry Tuwai saw Fiji, among the pre-tournament favourites in Rio de Janeiro, to a 12-7 victory over the All Blacks Sevens.

Awaiting Fiji, chasing a first Olympics medal, in the semi-finals is Japan.

Great Britain needed extra time to get past Argentina in a tight affair at the Deodoro Stadium.

Australia, which along with New Zealand progressed as a third-placed team, was beaten by South Africa.

TRY OF THE DAY

Dan Bibby was the hero for GB after their remarkable 0-0 draw through regulation time against Argentina. He crossed in what was the 18th minute to seal his team's win.

QUOTES

"I won't use injuries as an excuse. But your team changes in a massive way," - New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens said, referencing Sonny Bill Williams' tournament-ending Achilles injury in the pool stages.

"I don't think it is a matter of countries passing us. It shows how ruthless sevens is. Any country can turn up and win. There are no 80 minutes to grind out a comeback and the bounce of a ball can change a game," - DJ Forbes explaining New Zealand's shock loss.

"When New Zealand and Fiji play, it's always a final," - captain Kolinisau revelled in Fiji's victory.

"I'm absolutely speechless at what's just happened," - Bibby struggled to believe the finish to GB's win.

WHAT'S NEXT

The men's tournament wraps up on Thursday. Fiji take on Japan in its semifinal, while South Africa meet Great Britain. The bronze and gold medal games will follow.
