Silver no consolation for Schippers

A silver medal in the 200 metres was not enough to satisfy Dafne Schippers, who only had her eyes set on gold at Rio 2016.

Schippers is the reigning world champion over the distance but was beaten by Jamaica's Elaine Thompson in Wednesday's final at the Olympic Stadium.

Having missed out on a medal in the 100m, the Dutchwoman was hoping to top the podium over the longer distance.

With that chance now gone, Schippers – the first woman outside of Jamaica or the United States to win a medal in the event since 2004 – was left to rue the outcome and her lacklustre performances over both sprints.

"I came for gold. I was in good form. My times were OK but they were not strong enough," said Schippers.

"It's heavy to run six races. I was getting closer and closer. I felt I was nearly passing her [Thompson], but then I broke down as well.

"I haven't made my mind up about what happened. I'm not happy with the silver."
