Apurvi ousts Meghana to top Nat'l shooting selection trials

Olympian Apurvi Chandela put up a spectacular performance to clinch the top spot in the women's air rifle national shooting selections on Monday.

Olympian Apurvi Chandela came up with four of her best shots in the climax to beat Meghana Sajjanar by 1.3 points for the top place in women’s air rifle in the National shooting selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Monday.

The 23-year-old Apurvi, who had won the World Cup Final silver two years ago, had a string of 10.6, 10.7, 10.6 and 10.4 in the climax. Asian champion Pooja Ghatkar who had won the bronze in the World Cup in Delhi at the start of this season, pipped qualification topper Anjum Moudgil  (418.2) by 0.4 points for the third place, after having qualified in the eighth place in a field of 129 shooters.

Aditi Singh, Vaishnavi Padalkar, Raj Choudhary and Nancy Turna placed fifth to eighth respectively. Olympian Ayonika Paul who has been in good form, missed the final by 0.4 points.

In the men’s rifle prone event, Sushil Ghalay pipped World Championship and Olympic medallist Gagan Narang by 1.5 point for the top slot. Qualification topper Navdeep Singh Rathore (623.6) placed eighth, while Pankaj Desai marched to the third place ahead of Rahul Poonia, Surendra Singh Rathod and Hariom Singh .

The experienced Sanjeev Rajput (614.9) and Chain Singh (614.6) placed 12th and 14th respectively.

In men’s standard pistol, World junior champion Anish Bhanwala won with a total of 574, ahead of Neeraj Kumar and Olympian Gurpreet Singh.
