Heena bags 10m air pistol gold in KSS shooting

Despite shooting a string of 9s and a last shot of 8.6, Heena Sidhu's lead in the final round ensured that she pipped Malaika, who shot a 10.2 in her final attempt.

Heena Sidhu prevailed in a tough battle against Commonwealth Games silver medallist Malaika Goel to win the women's 10m air pistol at the 17th All India Kumar Surendra Singh shooting championship at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Monday.

Despite shooting a string of 9s and a last shot of 8.6, Heena's lead ensured that she pipped Malaika, who shot a 10.2 in her final attempt.

Malaika was beaten to the gold in the junior section as well by Manu Bhaker, by 2.8 points. Manu won the youth gold as well.

Shri Nivetha managed to pull ahead of Shweta Singh for the bronze in the women’s event, while world junior champion Yashaswini Singh Deswal did not shoot the final, both in the women’s and junior sections, after having shot the second best score of 382 in qualification. Anisa Sayyed, who shot 381 in qualification, missed the final, as she was late.

Olympian Annu Raj Singh missed the final by one point, with a score of 379.

In men’s centre fire pistol, Sudhir Kumar clinched the gold ahead of Samaresh Jung after being tied on 586, while Achal Pratap Singh Grewal took the bronze, three points behind. Gurpreet Singh and Anhad Jawanda were fourth and fifth respectively on 582, while the all-conquering Anish Bhanwala had to settle for the sixth place with 581, ahead of Harpreet Singh and Vijay Kumar.
