National champions in skeet Maheshwari Chauhan and Angad Vir Singh Bajwa will be competing in the skeet event of the Qatar Open shotgun championship in Doha on Friday and Saturday.

Unlike the trap field in which many Indians figured, both the skeet shooters decided to give themselves the extra international exposure to be better prepared for the season ahead, starting with the World Cups.

"All the top athletes from around the world are here. It is a good event to practice and prepare for the international season," said Maheshwari.

Angad was also on the same wavelength, stressing the importance of such a quality international competition.

"It is good to shoot a test competition before the World Cups start," said Angad, about the strong competition which will feature 18 squads in men, women and juniors.

Unlike the rifle and pistol team, which will soon go through another set of selection trials to finalise the team for the next World Cup in Beijing in April, the shotgun teams had been finalised for the first three World Cups to be staged in Mexico, UAE and Korea.

The onus will be on the shooters to capitalise on the clarity and get the Olympic quota places for Tokyo 2020 Games.
